STAB: What age
did you start surfing?
WW: As far as I remember, I had my first
surf 'between the flags' at North Bondi on a Col. Sanders
foamy, in 1973. 1976 was when it really started being
fun, when I was pushed onto a couple of little lefts, by
one of my older brothers, in the Spooky Beach corner in
Angourie.
STAB: Obviously you brother Greg is a
shaper, what made you guys start shaping boards?
WW: Dad didn't want to spoil his sons,
so he made the older boys strip down and reshape old
Malibu's in an effort to save money and see how
interested they really were in this new passion of
theirs. As far as I'm concerned, after Pro surfing, I
thought it was a good path to follow to keep me connected
with the surf and fellow surfers. It also beats labouring
or washing dishes (both past jobs of mine), hands down!
STAB: Where did you get your board
making skills?
WW: I think the hands on shaping skills
have been passed on through the generations, with so much
artistry in the family, someone's always creating
something. As far as actual design and theory, this has
come from a mixture of my brother Greg's knowledge and my
own experience.
STAB: When did you go out on your own?
WW: 1995 I had my first decals made for
my own label, it was a picture of the Grim Reaper. A mate
of mine still rides that first board!
STAB: You had a shop. What was it called
and where was it?
WW: In Sept 2000 (Sydney Olympics) me
and a mate Tim Okkerse opened Krack surf and skate
up the hill at South Bondi, a new era in Bondi was born.
STAB: Why did you open a surf shop?
WW: The reason for opening the shop was
that we felt the pre existing shops had fallen out of
touch with the locals. Considering that was US, we
thought we'd do something about it.
STAB: Why did you sell up and go to
Anga?
WW: I felt my surfing was suffering
riding Sydney slop, so it was time to pack up shop and
move back to Angourie where I new I could work on new
designs in the perfect waves.
STAB: Who buys your boards?
WW: If you want a new board, I can
design and shape you what ever you desire and know it's
going to ride smooth and fast, that I'm sure of.
STAB: Whats your customer willing
to pay for boards?
WW: $650
STAB: Name some famous riders who have
ridden your boards.
WW: Occy, Matt Branson, Trent Munro, Dan
Ross, Matt Hoy and am currently doing two new ones for
World #4 Danny Wills. My top team rider is Angourie's
Zane Byrne.
STAB: When did you start out with the
band Toe to Toe?
WW: 2002 I got the call. Three years
later we have toured Oz twice independently and twice as
a part of major tours.
STAB: Were you in any bands prior?
WW: The infamous MINDCRACK!
STAB: Where did you play? Which was the
most memorable gig?
WW: Vans Warp Tour '03 but I
think our set at Livid '04 was the best, the
audience just went mad, half of which we knew that had
come up from Anga's.
STAB: What are you doing these days?
WW: Living in Angourie with my
girlfriend Carly, surfing , shaping and loving life.
STAB: Tell us about where you like to
surf most?
WW: Just all around here, unless we get
a big south swell then it's off to the Super Bank.
STAB: Tell us about your boards and what
influences have helped you shape them.
WW: My boards are smooth throughout
(rocker/planshape) therefore you're not pushing water or
bogging through turns. These designs should cover all
surfers needs and wishes and have been derived from a
combination of my own surfing, my favourite surfers and
the close work I have done with the best shapers the
world. |
